Project Name

Restoration of the Nauwald Building
719 South Flores Street
San Antonio, Texas

Project Description: The building at 719 South Flores was constructed in 1885 for C. Henry Nauwald, who operated a furniture store on the street floor and lived on the second level. The Architect expanded the building and redesigned the interior to meet the marketing firm's needs which occupies the street level and basement. The second floor became a spacious residence with extra rooms for visiting children and grandchildren. To provide enough space, the building was extended with a two-story addition, totaling about 3,130 SF at the rear. The galvanized metal exterior of the addition is pure modernity, a strong contrast to the weathered brick of the original structure.

The first floor of the addition holds a large office that serves as the marketing firm's main workplace and as a library. The second floor is the tenant's master bedroom with translucent glass windows opening to a balcony facing the west. The original wood trusses were retained and left exposed. The red pine flooring throughout the old building is original. The wood from the removed partitions found new life as custom shelving and exposed roof decking in the master bedroom. Old doors from the basement were put to use upstairs as well. At the lower level, a sunken courtyard was created that brings natural light into the designers' spaces and transforms the lower level to a more relaxed open space. At street level, a curving partition divides the marketing firm's reception area from the office area and defines a corridor to a conference room and the partner's offices.
